Cefotaxime Sodium or the sodium salt of cefotaxime, is a beta-lactam, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with anti-bactericidal activity. Compared to the first and second-generation cephalosporins, cefotaxime sodium has more activity against gram-negative bacteria and less activity against gram-positive bacteria. Cefotaxime sodium inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. Such inactivation interferes with the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains and leads to weakness of the bacterial cell wall and cell lysis.
